Winter Lecture – 5 November 2014

Bethlehem, a city besieged’ a talk by the Rt Rev Richard Llewellin.

When Bishop Richard retired he spent three months as a volunteer in Israel and Palestine as an Ecumenical Accompanier where he observed at first hand the tensions between Palestinians, Arabs and Israelis in Bethlehem.

We heard a first-hand account of the realities of day to day life in a city where disputes about land ownership and the treatment of minorities mean that it is never far from the news.

Many will remember Bishop Richard when he was Bishop of Dover from 1992 to 1999. He subsequently became Bishop at Lambeth and Chief of Staff to the Archbishop of Canterbury until he retired in 2004. He is Chairman of the Anglican Society for the Welfare of Animals.
